Project summary
Grounswell focus on economic equity
and the energy sector operating clean energy and efficiency programs that
educate, engage, and mobilize economically diverse households and
businesses .Over the past 6 years,
Groundswell has successfully implemented this model in the energy sector to
reduce the cost of clean energy and increase the accessibility of these
services to communities at all income levels. Currently, they operate 3 types
of programs in the mid-Atlantic region: residential wind
power, residential
solar power, and efficiency and
energy solutions for commercial organizations. Specifically, they organize local residents and
institutions into collective purchasing groups and serve as a guide through the
entire process of securing clean energy, from requesting supplier bids to
negotiating to get the most affordable rates. They also activate and organize
consumers to participate in civic actions to advocate for cleaner energy and a
healthier environment in their communities .Groundswell was founded in 2009 by
a group of field organizers who had worked together on Barack Obama's 2008
presidential campaign. Co-founder Will Byrne served as Founding CEO through
2014.
